Lou Magazzu – so intent on lobbying for his failed NACo Campaign that he wasn’t able to pay attention to county business and allowed us to be blindsided by a $4 to $8 MILLION budget shortfall this year – is playing the “tough guy” and holding the unions accountable!
Let’s take a look at what is really happening. I have to thank a friend from the dark side for assisting in this analysis. It’s important to note the difference between these two unions (1) county workers (UAW), and (2) Trade unions.
Fran , the president of UAW, was very pleased to be photographed in a mailer during the last election showing loyal Democrats for Lou ! Now Lou is posturing to hold the memberships accountable, lose pay or face layoffs.
Here are some questions to bear in mind:
Is Smith more beholden to Lou, or to his membership? Will Smith do his job and negotiate for the union members that pay his salary? Or will he side with his buddy Lou who is in a position to repay with political favors?
Will Nelson Thompson (trade union guy and candidate this coming year) ride in to save the day for the workers and court their votes for next Nov., or will he throw them under the bus to garner votes from the public?
Will the deal be made before Smith leaves for his Florida home for the winter?
The trade unions, with Nelson Thompson, Steve Sweeney, and now assemblyman Don Norcross are not being threatened by Lou. They do Lou’s (and Thompson’s) Get Out the Vote in the elections in exchange for a free ride and favoritism at all levels. The trade unions will never, ever face a mandate to take pay cuts or make other personal sacrifices for county projects.
