County taxpayers send Don Olbrich to Hawaii

Jack Hummel really got one over on us –

In yesterday’s Ben:

When Don Olbrich goes to the annual streets and roads convention in Hawaii, they’ll think he’s an old-timer.
Them: How much experience you got, chief?
Olbrich: Three blizzards in double digits.’’

I am sure that the county workers that Magazzu is firing will be happy to know that Don Olbrich is going to Hawaii on the county dime. Is Hawaii the ONLY place in the world with streets and roads? These sorts of conventions to exotic vacation spots are a travesty and a grand scam on the taxpaying public.

In today’s Ben:

“I am responding to the remark published in the Feb. 16 BEN column regarding my supposed attendance to a convention in Hawaii.
“For the record, there is no streets and roads convention I’m scheduled to attend in Hawaii, or anywhere else.
“I would appreciate you publishing this correction in your next column.’’
— Don Olbrich,
director of public works
Cumberland County

Some people actually believed that!
“Streets and road convention in Hawaii’’?
What would a streets and roads convention entail?
The latest asphalt?
New white line paint?
The latest in plow blades?
The latest in ince melters?
In Hawaii?
C’mon, people!
It was meant to laud Olbrich for withstanding tremendous pressure in only a few short months on the job.
Good job, D.O.!

Do you realy take Hummel’s BS as fact?
I would be curious if this was for real.
These freeloaders could not be that stupid.

If this is True about the Trip to Hawaii then there is 7 Freeholders that have some Serious Explaining to DO too the Public.

The $4-8 Million Dollar Cumberland County Budget Shortfall Solidifies that all Non-Essential EXPENDITURES must & will STOP.
No IF And or Butts about IT!

Any kind of Air Travel is Out of the Question for Now for County Officials, Employees or anyone Else that could possibly have the Public to Pay for this EXPENSE as Our Budget is $4-8 million Away from being Balanced!

Have these FREEHOLDERS ever Heard of a Computer & the BENEFITS that these kind of Devices are Bringing to County Govt throughout AMERICA.

ELIMINATING the Unnecessary Travel of Public Officials to Conferences is just one of the things they DO to SAVE MONEY.
Using these same Computers that U & I correspond with on here (even Lou might have used a Computer before) in a way that would bring this Community into the 21st Century.
Plenty are ALREADY doing just THIS!

They (Freeholders & Dept Heads)Talk about Saving the County Money the real Question is:
Will they Listen to the Public & their Ideas on how to SAVE this COUNTY some of the CA$H they are WASTING?

Oh-ya does anyone know when the Trip to the Aloha State is to Take Place & how many from Cumberland County that have been Invited to Attend this Seminar or Demonstration on Clearing the Snow covered Roads & Fixing the Potholes & how to Change a Truck Tire & how to Wash your Truck & how to Spread Salt & when is IT time to Spread the Brine All this is going on in Hawaii.

  6. Curious says:

Jack Ass Hummel admitted it was a hoax.
Never put much faith in this local paper idiot who gets his ink by the barrel. His column makes one really miss the Scribbler by the late Ralph Brandt.
Brandt was a gentleman with class. Hummel is the exact opposite.

  9. overeducated says:

Sometime last year, the county put a ban on out of state travel and overnite stays for conferences.
    As it should be.

It is a real shame that Don had this kind of comment about him. Everyone is chomping at the bit like a rabid dog wanting to find wrong doing.

I am not sure how Don got his job or if he is qualified for it, but he has done one heck of a job in his first winter. It helps having a good supervisor crew and good plow guys behind him.

  10. Still Snowed In says:

I think we all know how the job was obtained. I think that we should consider the 1 million dollar cost for snow removal during these past storms. If better management and supervision resulted in a 15% cost savings how many county jobs would this save?

  11. Oinkforfreedom says:

I am still waiting to see if they cut the hiring of consultants and lawyers. They seem to pop up everywhere. Why? Local govts do not want to hire permanent full-time employees that would force them to pay full benefits and pensions (Like what Mr. Kavenagh ALMOST got!).
I see that but come on, most lawyers work for more then one local govt. Where in the budget can a Joe average person find this spending??
