I suppose the most surprising news from last night’s Freeholder meeting is that Lou Magazzu resigned his position as Freeholder director.
“Over the last seven months, I have been working as part of a team with an energy consulting business. We have opportunities all over the region and the nation but they require my attention and also some travel. I have tried to work for two masters of the directorship and my business, but do not believe I can continue to do so in 2011,” he told the board.
None of the other Democrat Freeholders seem interested in taking the position. I cannot imagine that the party would ever allow the minority party to hold that slot, it just isn’t feasible.
My first reaction to this news is “what does Lou have up his sleeves?” But there have been rumblings from my friends in the Democratic party that there is a move afoot to oust him not only as Director but as Chair. Lou’s actions have allegedly led to Stephen Sweeney being fined $5,000 for illegal campaign contributions to Lou’s fake NACo PAC. Did Sweeney’s presence at last night’s meeting have anything to do ensuring that Lou step down?
What deals were made with Lou to ensure his quiet departure from local politics? Has his energy company been promised any deals? Time will tell, but it seems the focus of Magazzu Watch will have to change in the near future. Don’t worry, we will continue to bring you the latest news that the news doesn’t see fit to report.
