It’s a nice, sunny day. You’re walking your dog down the street and bam out of nowhere; you are verbally accosted and threatened with physical violence by one of these thugs. Alternatively, you’re putting up political signs on Election Day and another thug hurls racial slurs at you, and threatens to do physical harm to you. What would you do? Call the police? File a complaint? Call your homies for back up? You’re not in the projects or in an undesirable section of town late at night. You’re a couple houses down from your home on Lake Street or across from the DeHursey Community Center in broad day light.
You ask why I use the word “Thug”?. I’ll elaborate. A “thug” is someone who tries to intimidate another individual with the threat of physical violence. This is a common practice with Bridgeton’s Democratic Party leaders and encouraged by the candidates they endorse. You have a Democratic Party city leader (Todd Edwards) who not once, but on two occasions (first in 2006 and again in 2010) threatened physical harm and used racial slurs to former Mayor James Begley. In addition, he destroyed and stole opposition signs right in front of Mr. Begley. Of course, the offender was found not guilty in a court of law in Salem City (no doubt due to family influences). The reason for a not guilty verdict was because there was no video or audio evidence.
Wow! This guy is still on County Boards making decisions that affect every citizen of Cumberland County. What a role model for the young African Americans in our community! Then we have the current Mayor Albert Kelly’s Campaign Manager and Assembly Women/Candidate, Celeste Riley’s spouse (Rick Dawson), who on several occasions has clinched his fists, snarled his teeth, and barked insults like a rabid dog to provoke a fight with the former Mayor Begley. He acted as if he were a twelve-year-old bully in the school yard looking to pick a fight. Yeah, folks this is how the Democratic Party doesbusiness in Bridgeton. Heck, don’t take my word for it- just ask current council members, Pastor Dennis Thompson, or Bill Spence. I’m sure they remember having witnessed such outburst of each of the individuals first hand. They probably won’t recall those events the way they actually happened.
Imagine if former Mayor Begley or I used racial slurs at Prince Albert or threatened his merry band of council. We would be arrested, and branded as racists, prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I’ll bet Rev. Al Sharpton would probably be down here having a rally and march. My point is simple. Thugs should be behind bars and have no business in a civil society- let alone in the political process. They certainly should not be allowed to sit on any boards making decisions in this city or county impacting are future whatsoever.
