Trooper escort goes 100MPH?

In a recent Ben column I found this gem. Someone said Nelson Albano was in one of the cars… (LOL)

The state police are investigating complaints that two troopers escorted a caravan of luxury sports cars — one of which sources say was carrying former New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs — at speeds in excess of 100 mph down the Garden State Parkway to Atlantic City last month.

In the complaints, obtained by The Star-Ledger, witnesses said that in the early afternoon of March 30, they saw two state police patrol cars with their emergency lights flashing driving in front of and behind the southbound caravan, which included dozens of Porsches, Lamborghinis and Ferraris.

One witness, Wayne Gantt, dubbed the escort “Death Race 2012.”

What were they trying to do, reenact the Jon Corzine crash?

Why do officials do such stupid things?
