Bridgeton deserves better than giving politicians a 42% pay raise

Jim Begley at it again. Bridgeton leaders prove that they are in the game ONLY for the money, and after twenty years have nothing to show for it. I generally do not concentrate on city-centric issues on MWatch, but this deserves some attention as Bridgeton is the county seat, and Al Kelly was groomed by Lou Magazzu, and some of his cronies still have power in county issues that affect us all.

Our city government is underpaid for the hours of service they perform. Sitting for hours at a time puts a tremendous amount of stress on their decision making muscle. Yes, this group has the nerve to take a 42% pay raise. Did they campaign on that, lower property taxes, provide a safe clean City environment? No, just the opposite. Usually when politicians vote themselves a pay raise it does not implement the raise until after the next election cycle. This gives the electorate a chance to vote those who voted for the increase out of office. But not in Bridgeton. This Council doesn’t want to hear it and they want it retroactive from July 1. They even had the unmitigated gaul to attach their raise to the salary schedule for city employees so if it does not pass the city employees will have to wait for their raises too. Class Act. Way to look after your own interests. At least you learned how to work the system.

This pay increase occurs during a time of escalating violence and unsafe Bridgeton neighborhoods. For some time now violence has been on the rise throughout the city and for some time now city officials have looked for any excuse to avoid dealing with the problem. Some of our government officials have lived here all their lives, one in particular keeps telling the tax payers he needs more meetings to find out what the problem is and how to solve it, even while admitting that having meetings doesn’t alone solve the problems. So far he has come up with walking through neighborhoods with tip sheets. He has even drawn a pay check for the past twenty years for a Agency who’s mission statement is“improve the quality of life and promote self-sufficiency,” headquartered in Bridgeton. If your job is to improve peoples lives, you have been at it for more than twenty years, you are the CEO of the agency as well as the head of the City of Bridgeton and you don’t have a plan for dealing with these problems?? Please stop wasting everyone’s time. This Council and Administration are clearly out of touch and have their own self interests as a priority.
